Chapter Five

Harriet spent the next few days researching, brainstorming and sketching out roughs. The ideas were suddenly flowing fast and free, and she became increasingly comfortable drawing the naked forms of both men and women. She visited some highly dubious websites for inspiration and some highly dubious regions of her own imagination, too.

She saw nothing of Jean-Jacques who’d bidden her ‘ à bientôt ’ when he’d left the other day, declaring he would return on Thursday because Wednesday was too soon for the garden. Initially, she thought about him plenty, and every Kama Sutra drawing she created was, in her mind, a depiction of Jean-Jacques making love to her. She thought about his lips on her flesh, his body against hers, his powerful cock rising high inside her. And those thoughts fueled her hunger to create. She also thought about Jean-Jacques spanking her, his punishing hand pounding her buttocks to fire, but that wasn’t in the Kama Sutra so her secret desire wasn’t rendered on the page.

After a while, she settled on a concept of slender, cartoonish figures surrounded by curlicues of fruit and flowers, spangled with suggestions of stars and heavenly bliss. Sure, it was still people fucking, as Cressida had called it, but, rather than endlessly athletic positions, the emphasis was on ecstasy, on lovers cocooned by rapture, transported to another realm.

She had Jean-Jacques to thank for that idea, his unconventional strawberry sundae, and the evident pleasure he’d taken from showering in the sprinkler, highlighting to Harriet the sensuality of sex. In her illustrations, she was hoping to convey a sense of the act becoming so much more than the physical, becoming heady, magical and rich.

For her proposal, she chose three positions to illustrate—The Bandoleer, in which Harriet, having successfully crash-dieted, lay on her back, her feet on Jean-Jacques’ chest as he drove into her, The Sideways Samba, which showed off Jean-Jacques buttocks to great advantage, and The Rutting Deer, a curious acrobatic position that would probably require Harriet to learn the art of levitation because, while Jean-Jacques certainly looked strong and was more than adequately endowed, there was no way he could support her weight in that manner.

If Harriet won the commission, she’d work with a graphic designer to create the final pages but the publisher wanted the lead concept to be driven by the illustrator. Enthused by her work but limited by her lack of inks, nibs, watercolors and layout pads, Harriet decided to drive to Bordeaux in the hope of locating some art supplies. She spent the day drinking in the sights and sounds of the city, and bought nearly half the stock of a little art shop tucked away in a cobbled side street.

It was only when she returned to the gîte, her car loaded with goodies, her head full of colors and ideas, that she realized it was Thursday and she’d missed Jean-Jacques. All the days were blurring into one out here, and Harriet could have sworn it was only Wednesday. But no. After doing a quick recap of recent days, Harriet concluded it was definitely Thursday.
